Newbridge Rugby Kicks Off!
This week at Newbridge Academy, the Junior High Phys. Ed. class began their weekly Rugby lessons! The students began the hour with a warm up of “Cups and Saucers”. This was a great warm up game where students were split into teams and tried to be the team with the most pylons sitting as cups (pylon upright) or saucers (pylon flipped over).
Students then participated in relay races focused on running with ball in hand. Students were initially introduced to scoring a try, which built into the first race – running a length and scoring a try. Students extended this drill by having to make 3 “cuts” in different directions before scoring a try then passing to the next person in line.
Lastly, students participated in a 1 on 1 drill where the ball carrier had to avoid a tag from the defender. The focus again was on running with ball in hand, along with finding space to evade the defender.
It was a great introductory lesson for the students! Next week, the students will be building on running with the ball and the fundamentals of passing.
