Newbridge Female Hockey Sweeps in Philadelphia’s Thanksgiving Tournament
Female Varsity Brings Home the GOLD!
Newbridge’s Female Varsity entered Philadelphia’s Iceworks 4Plex Friday 25th November to the immediate comments reverberating through the concourse: ‘Who is that?!,’ ‘’Do they ever look professional and organized,’ and ‘Where are they from?!’ After the first game, and until the final buzzer of the Championship Game, word spread as to who Newbridge Academy’s Varsity Female Hockey team was and where they were from.
The opening game saw Newbridge take on Delaware AA team, Delco Phantams followed by Pennsylvania’s The Quakers. Offensive lines of Penney, Drake and Rowe, with Bishop, Forbes and Bodnar proved too much to handle for the home side favorites. Blueliners Donahue & Hayden, Blair & Sweetapple cleaned house, dominated the bluelines, and contributed points. Holding down the fort was stalwart goaltending tandem of MacNeil and Honkoop. Both were stellar back stoppers when Newbridge ran into penalty trouble late into two games.
“Philadelphia’s tournament was a positive step both on and off the ice for our players. They executed the systems and skill sets we’ve focused on over the past 3 months. Additionally, the Philly event puts our players into the NCAA recruiting mix,” stated Head Coach and Director of Varsity Female Hockey, Lainie Wintrup. “Moving forward, these games will open up additional opportunities to compete South of the border. It was fantastic to have coaches and refs mention how disciplined the team performed; how well coached they were. Comments about how excited they were to see our players one day at Division I was awesome! Truly a rewarding experience for the team.”
The team had the opportunity to visit an NCAA Female Hockey Dressing room while at the tournament. “The hard work, the training, the dreams they are aspiring to, really resonated for them when we stood in that dressing room. Hard work and perseverance will take them far, but it was the three words they saw on that team’s wall in Philly that really resonated: commitment, discipline, and integrity – core values of our own program,” said Coach Wintrup about the possibility of these players moving upwards after Grade 12. “In the classroom, on the ice, and in the training room, Newbridge Academy has the personnel and tools to get our players to the next level – CIS or NCAA. Our players have the drive.”
Newbridge Varsity Female Hockey will travel to PEI before Christmas for two games, then heading to Moncton’s DQ Tournament the first weekend of January followed by a trip to Ottawa Senator’s Showcase Tournament the 13th – 15th January.
