Newbridge Academy is happy to announce the addition of Garret MacLean to our Pee Wee Major Varsity Hockey Program!
Garret MacLean hails from Enfield, Nova Scotia. He started very early with a love for sports joining Can Skate at the age of 3 and when he was not on the ice or playing road hockey he was spending summers on the soccer field. Most of the time, he can be found with a hockey stick in hand or playing with a ball of some sort.
Garret had a very successful 2014-2015 season as a member of the East Hants Atom AA Penguins. Garret was a leading scorer on the team netting 35G-19A-54P over the course of the season. Garret played a key role in helping the Penguins to the Central Minor Hockey Federation League finals where the team would garner a silver medal.
Outside of his club season with the Penguins, Garret played as a member of the Newbridge Academy Gladiators that played against top prospects from around the Province and Region. Garret was named MVP at the Prince Edward Island Prospect Tournament. This helped earn him the honour of being named a finalist for the East Hants Sports Heritage U14 male athlete of the year award 2016.
Last year he was a successful rookie with pretty impressive game stats (23 Goals 48 Assists for 71 Points in 75 games) with the powerhouse East Hants peewee AAA team, where he was often referred to as a stick handling whiz. He was a big part in the offensive play for his team that captured 4 gold medals in season tournaments. The biggest accomplishment for him was winning provincials on home ice and going on to win silver in the Atlantic Championships where his team won the Fred Fox Male Team of the Year HNS award.
In the spring, Garret played with the NS Prospects Team. This team played in high caliber tournaments in Montreal and Boston where they even won gold. Garret is very coachable especially in high pressure, stressful situations- given his high skill set, he has been a staple for teams he has been on.
Now he is ready to begin a new chapter attending and playing for Newbridge Academy. This has been the biggest decision Garret has made up to this point in his hockey career and it is with mixed emotions that he leaves his home club East Hants. He cannot thank EHMHA coaching staff enough for their commitment to making him the player he is today.
Garret’s other interests include camping, fishing, track and field and soccer. A few weeks ago he was named MVP for the Bruce Wagner memorial soccer tournament with the East Hants U12 boys.
His future hockey goals are to play QMJHL as well as on the high performance program teams with HNS and Team Canada.
“Garret is an awesome young man and was a very coachable player when he played for our 04’ program at Newbridge Academy a number of years ago. Since that time I have enjoyed seeing him play and now very pleased that he and his family will be a part of our school and varsity hockey program.” ~Paddy Flynn, Director of Varsity Hockey Programs, Newbridge Academy~
