KMF Athletic Therapy Services
Dear Newbridge Parents,
I wanted to take a minute of your time and introduce myself and our clinic to you. I am Katie MacDonald Farris and I am the owner of KMF Athletic Therapy. I have 2 children at Newbridge (grades 4 and 6) and have been a huge supporter of the school since it started 10 years ago. I am so excited to be joining Newbridge Academy at the new location this year!
KMF Athletic Therapy will be providing on-site injury care (assessment and rehab) for all students/staff as well as first responder coverage for all activities that take place at the school, outdoor turf and rink. We will also be providing medical coverage for the hockey teams both at home and away games starting in mid-October.
First responder care and immediate care (wound care/taping/wrapping/ice etc.) following an injury are all covered under your tuition fees. All athletes will be given a concussion baseline test over the next few weeks free of charge (a $65-100 value)
Follow up care (injury assessment, treatment, modalities, taping, exercise prescription, etc.) will be on a fee-for-service basis. The fee for Newbridge students will be $40/visit + HST (which is a significant saving over private patient billing). This may be covered under your extended health care plan (under athletic therapy) but of course every plan is different. There is a student athlete insurance plan that covers injuries sustained participating in a school activity. In addition, there is a Hockey Canada insurance policy that will cover any injury sustained in a HC sanctioned event. Neither of these insurance policies are able to be direct billed, you must submit your receipts for reimbursement. Please contact me if you have any questions about insurance coverage.
Appointments in the clinic will be booked on a first-come first-serve basis and we will make every effort to book the students during their free period or activity block should they not be able to participate due to the injury. We are open during school hours and Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well.
Many of the students have already been in to visit the clinic and even though we are only done week 2 there have been a few injuries already! With that in mind and knowing it is a long season we want to make you aware of a pre-paid treatment plan that we are offering to any Newbridge athlete. The plan is $500/school year and provides up to 50 athletic therapy treatments. Anyone who has suffered a major injury knows you can burn through your insurance coverage in a few visits and cost of therapy adds up quickly. If you are interested in this plan please contact me for further details.
Over the next few months we will be adding a few additional clinicians to our team. We will be welcoming a massage therapist as well as an osteopath who specializes in concussion care. More details to follow! We will also be working directly with Dr. Atkinson and her team at Medicine in Motion in Dartmouth should one of the athletes need further care. She will also be available for out-of-town athletes who don’t have a family doctor.
While this is an athlete focused clinic we are also open to any private patients who are looking to have their injuries assessed/treated.
Of course, if you do not wish for your child to have therapy at our clinic that is totally your choice, this is not mandatory! If your child is receiving treatment at another clinic I would be happy to be in contact with them as needed.
If you are not familiar with athletic therapy and how it differs from other forms of therapy please feel free to contact me directly or you can visit our national website at www.athletictherapy.org.
I look forward to talking with and meting many of you over the next few months and we will do everything we can to keep your kids safe and healthy!
