Off to the 2018 Women’s World Championships for Sammons
Sara Sammons is a grade 11 student at Newbridge Academy who is currently in Poland competing in the Female U18 Division 1B World Championships proudly representing her home country of Australia. With the majority of students at Newbridge coming from Canada, it was a tremendous nod to our young program, to have a student athlete from the other side of the world choose us as her next destination for development.
Sara came to Newbridge in search of the experience of a lifetime. Her growth on the ice has been largely noticeable during the first half of the school year with our Female Midget Varsity Hockey Program. She spent the Christmas holidays with the Drake family in Dartmouth and then departed on New Year’s Eve to meet up with her Australian National Teammates.
Sara will compete in the IIHF Women’s World U18 Division 1 Group B Championships against Great Britain, Denmark, China, France and tournament host Poland. France is expected to be the stronger team as they competed in Group A last year.
“It’s always exciting to represent your country at the highest level and I’m really looking forward to putting my skills that I’ve learned and practiced at Newbridge Academy to the test.” said Sammons just before she boarded her flight.
The championships run from January 6th to the 12th in Katowice, Poland. You can follow along during the tournament for updates and scores at www.iihf.com/competition/665/ . Sara will be welcomed back to continue her studies and play with the varsity program January 13th.
Newbridge Academy students, sports and academic staff wish Sara great success at the Worlds!
