Newbridge Student Alexys Filion finishes up Club Volleyball season at Nationals in Edmonton
This past weekend, Newbridge Student, Alexys Filion competed in the Volleyball Canada Championships held at the Edmonton Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. This event boasted hosting over 10,000 athletes in one week, in one city for the largest celebration of the sport in Canada.
Alexys is a setter for the Bedford Blizzard’s 17U Elite team. The team played in the three Super Series tournaments hosted by Volleyball Nova Scotia as well as a few other open tournaments offered throughout the club season, which runs from December to May. Her team placed fourth at the Provincial Tournament at the end of April. They battled hard at Nationals, going undefeated in the preliminaries. They faced a bit more competition during the power pools on the second day but still won two of the three matches. The third day of competition they played hard and made it to the semi finals before being eliminated by FOG volleyball club from Alberta.
“Nationals were a surreal experience. You have professional and amateur athletes, men and women from all over Canada competing in the same space. There is such a unique sense of shared excitement, a love for the sport that unites athletes for the weekend,” said head coach Carmen Swain. “Alexys really blossomed over the season in her setting skills, leadership skills and strategic thinking, which made her one of the most valuable players on the court. Perhaps most importantly, however, is the way that her kindness, maturity and fun personality helped bring the team together and create an even more valuable experience for her teammates.”
Alexys is one of many Newbridge students that participate in sports outside of our program offerings. She practices three times a week as well as participates in an off-court training program. She will be starting her beach volleyball season in June.
Congratulations on your successful season Alexys!
