Newbridge Rugby Football – Week 2
The Newbridge Rugby Football crew continued their training this week! Students were still developing their skills with ball handling, along with beginning to build their passing skills.
The session started with students passing to a partner using a “pop” pass. These are meant to be short, quick passes that are easy to catch. This also helped in developing student understanding that passing and catching in Rugby uses two hands.
We then moved on to relays. Students were asked to begin by running between cones passing the ball between their legs, followed by looping the ball around their bodies, then finishing with each group “picking and placing” until the team hit the opposite cone to sprint back to the start.
The next drill focused on developing the pop pass to players in a passing line. Students would sprint to an opposite cone, then pop a pass to the person in the next line. They practiced passing the ball in both directions, going from a right handed pass to a left handed pass.
Finally, we ended the session off with a game of “Red and White” (for the Canadian Flag). The group was split into half and placed on either side of a line, facing back to back. As the colour for each group was called, that colour would try to reach their safe zone before getting tagged by the opposite team.
It was another great session by the group! Next week will emphasize passing once more, along with finding support in space.
