Newbridge High School Rugby Kicks Off!
This week brought an exciting new beginning to the Rugby club; a high school Rugby side! As many other schools in the city have begun their practice season, Newbridge has gauged the interest among students and followed suit bringing our high school students into the fold.
On the high school side, we spent our practice time familiarizing ourselves with passing and proper technique. Again, as many of the athletes are new to the sport, time spent building good habits (presenting hands, calling for the ball, passing the ball across the body) will allow for smoother transitions into layering activities. The practice had students moving from stationary passing drills, switching directions and speed, to a 2 person passing drill running down a narrow path.
On the junior high side, we spent time practicing our defence. A game of British Bulldog was played, a game where a defender is in the middle of the field having to track an opposing player and pull a flag. Those that have their flagged pulled become a defender. The game progressed to include passing where if whoever had the ball and previously passed the ball got their flags pulled, the defence would receive those two as defenders instead of one. The athletes then moved to ball handling drills afterwards, but returned to British Bulldog as they enjoyed the activity.
This marks a new beginning for many of the students involved, being the first time they have tried the sport. As with all new beginnings comes great opportunity. We are all very excited in this new venture, along with building a progression between our junior high and high school students. Another update will come next week!
PS – the Rugby club is hosting a Pancake Lunch Fundraiser next Wednesday, February 14th, for staff and students. Two options are available – 2 pancakes and a drink for $3 or 3 pancakes and a drink for $4. Syrup is provided. Bring your appetite!
