Newbridge Academy Welcomes Stephanie Leger to the Midget Varsity Lineup
The youngest of 5 children, Dieppe’s Stephanie Leger makes her way to the Newbridge Academy Midget Varsity lineup for the 2017-2018 season. As a little girl, Stephanie spent most of her time in the rink. Whether she was watching her older brothers play hockey, or watching her sister figure skate, she proudly supported them from the sidelines.
At the early age of 18 months, Stephanie’s mother, a figure skating instructor introduced her first pair of skates to young Stephanie. In the backyard rink, she began to develop her knack for skating. By the age of 3, Leger was awarded BMO can-skater of the year and was selected to represent team NB by the age of 5.
Although she loved to figure skate, Stephanie felt the need to explore hockey. So, with that she decided to embark on a new journey. Leger spent her minor hockey playing high level boys hockey straight through to her 2nd year of Peewee AA. Her first year of Bantam hockey, she moved over to female hockey and played for the Moncton Rockets AAA. An exciting year for Stephanie, she and her team won Provincials and moved on to Atlantics where they competed hard in 4 overtime periods taking home a silver. Her 2nd year of Bantam, Stephanie decided to play for her High School team Mathieu-Martin. During the same season, she affiliated with the SEFHA Midget Stars who also collected a Provincial title that year.
In her first year of Midget, the competitive Leger once again returned to the Moncton Rockets AAA, securing another Provincial win. No stranger to success, Stephanie has had a long list of accomplishments along the way. Selected for Team NB U16 twice, Leger will once again represent her Province this year in the U18 ACC division. A talented and hardworking defenseman, Leger most recently was invited to attend the Team Atlantic tryouts. Eagerly awaiting the outcome of her tryout, Stephanie also looks forward to her future with Newbridge Academy to continue her hockey and academic achievements.
“Stephanie first stood out for me when I saw her play earlier in the new year. A steady puck moving rear guard that has a very nice offensive touch. Later at the Atlantics in East Hants I had a closer look and she didn’t disappoint. She has great skill with the puck and her skating is excellent…all tools that will be important for the growth of our first year midget program. I am looking forward to having Stephanie be a part of our school and happy that she is able to join some former teammates that will be a great part of making history again at Newbridge Academy.” – Paddy Flynn, Head Coach Female Hockey, Newbridge Academy
Always on the move, Stephanie fits in time to hit the gym, play soccer, fish with her father, enjoy the outdoors and make time for her friends. Volunteering her time to where it all began, Leger gives back to the Dieppe Gold Blades Figure Skating Club.
Welcome to Newbridge Academy Stephanie!
