Newbridge Academy: Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Gatorade Excellence Challenge
Newbridge Academy is proud to announce that seven of our student-athletes have been named to their respective provincial teams for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Gatorade Excellence Challenge. This event is taking place from April 26-29, 2018 in Boisbriand, Quebec and is the pinnacle of success for first-year Midget players. There will be a team representing each Atlantic province while Quebec will have two teams participating. The players will participate in off-ice testing on the first day, followed by three days of tournament play.
Team New Brunswick has chosen forwards Alex Arsenault from Saint Charles and Alexandre David from Pigeon Hill. They also chose defenceman Nico Savoie from Dieppe and goalie Ethan Pearson from Fredericton. Prince Edward Island is being represented by forward Devon Howatt of Charlottetown and representing Newfoundland is forward Brandon Casey from Grand Falls-Windsor and defenceman Kyle Lynch from Conception Bay South.
Each of these players have excelled both on and off the ice for Newbridge Academy this year. Nico Savoie has had an exceptional year- first committing to play NCAA Division I hockey for Providence College- and now having been chosen to Team New Brunswick. “I am really excited to be representing the school at this event,” said Savoie.
Kyle Lynch and Brandon Casey both had to fly back to Newfoundland over the weekend to attend the tryouts. “I think being on the ice with Newbridge everyday definitely helped to improve my skills over the past year,” said Lynch. “The coaching staff at Newbridge was able to dedicate time this year to help me with the skills I needed to work on, and I think that made a big difference in my game. I was excited to go home and see my friends. I feel like I used that energy on the ice and had a great tryout.
“I could not be more proud of these boys,” said Athletic Director and Major Midget Head Coach Olivier Filion. “To have left their province to play for us and still be chosen is an amazing accomplishment. They have each shown hard work and dedication to improving their level of play this year and it is shown through this accomplishment.”
Jake Quillan, a grade 10 student at Newbridge Academy was also chosen to attend. He will be a part of Team Nova Scotia after a successful Major Midget season with the Dartmouth Stelee Subaru.
