Newbridge Academy appoints Head Coach for Female Varsity Program
Dave Ritcey, Athletic Director of Newbridge Academy has announced that Paddy Flynn will be Head Coach of the schools Female Bantam and Midget Varsity Program. “Paddy was a natural choice. He has already demonstrated an ability to recruit and develop young student-athletes. Paddy has been an important part of the growth of Newbridge Academy for the past six and half years in the role of Director of Varsity Hockey Programming. In 2015-16 he led the Varsity Boys team to the PSHF Championship. This victory put Newbridge on the national map for hockey development.”
A career coach, Paddy brings a rich blend of coaching and development to the Female Varsity Program. A NCCP HP1 accredited coach, Paddy has had success at all levels, from minor hockey, tier 2, major junior and CIS. Paddy also coached internationally where he led the Icelandic U18 men’s team to earn an International Gold medal.
When asked about the opportunity to coach the Newbridge Academy Varsity Female Programs Paddy stated “I am really excited to be coaching in the varsity again. I love working in development, but I am most looking forward to working with both the bantam and midget groups. A coach is measured not by wins and losses. A coach is measured by the incremental improvement in each player. That is the objective that I get most excited about.”
“What a pleasure it was coaching with Paddy last season. To see the way that he interacts with the girls is quite impressive to say the least. He truly knows how to create a safe, relaxed atmosphere for the girls and is still able to push them hard and have them learn to focus at high speed. Knowing that both of my daughters are in his care takes away a lot of worry. I’m definitely confident that he will get them to the next level which is preparing them for a NCAA University. It only takes one time to meet Paddy and understand his passion for teaching is unmatched as he is one of, if not, the best hockey mind around.” – Dana Drake, U14 Parent 2016-2017
“It is very impressive what Coach Flynn has been able to achieve with the female varsity team in the first season. Each player was given the opportunity to play in all game situations and as a result the entire team began to play with a high level of confidence as reflected in their results later in the season. His calm demeanour during times of adversity, really allowed the team to play composed and with complete trust in their systems and teammates. By getting the female teams into the JWHL, Coach Flynn has ensured that all current and future Newbridge Academy Varsity Female players will have an opportunity to showcase their ability to NCAA and CIS scouts.” – Mark Donahue, U14 Parent 2016-2017
“Coach Flynn displays a calm and effective manner when dealing with the Newbridge female athletes. As a parent and team manager for the female varsity team, I was privy to practices, travel, games and mentoring. Coach Paddy Flynn always delivered inspiration, knowledge and encouragement when it came to the game of hockey and life. It was easy to see how well these young athletes adapted to his coaching style, but more importantly developed into elite level student athletes.” – Nicole Drake, U14 Team Manager 2016-2017
Paddy lives in Eastern Passage NS, with his wife Donna, step-son Brayden. Paddy is also a proud parent to son Tanner and daughter Teresa.
Further announcements are forthcoming on returning and new student-athletes to the program as well as upcoming announcements on coaching / management support staff for the female program for this coming 2017-2018 season.
