New Homeroom for Newbridge Academy
Scheduled to Open for 2017-18 School Year
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 27, 2016 (Dartmouth, NS) – A ceremonial sod-turning took place today for a new multimillion-dollar facility that will accommodate more than 500 students the experience of education and sport at its best. The new complex, set to open next September will address the growing needs of Newbridge Academy, an independent school integrating academics and sport.
Newbridge Academy opened its doors nine years ago with 28 students, and has now grown to over 300 students with a projection of as many as 500 for September 2017. Located on John Savage Drive in Dartmouth, the new school will include classrooms for grades JP-12, a 1/3 pitch-sized indoor field for soccer, baseball, and golf, a cafeteria/auditorium for performing arts, and a 7000 square foot training space for Newbridge Academy’s partner – ProEdge Sport Conditioning. Newbridge Academy will also have onsite athletic therapy for the students and is pleased to be partnered with KMF Athletic Therapy for the student-athletes. The new building is ideally situated across the road from the Harbour East All-Weather Sports Field and the coming Dartmouth four-pad arena complex.
The school is specifically designed to be a green building, with elementary classes housed in one area of the building and junior and senior high classes in another. Design of the building is nearing completion and construction is set to begin by the end of November. The facility is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2017.
Newbridge Academy founder and CEO Trevor MacEachern was on hand with some of his staff, students, and parents to participate in the sod turning Ceremony. Mayor Mike Savage also attended along with Councillor Mancini (District 6), David Wallace, Vice President, Development of Somerled Properties who will own and operate the facility, and Donald MacDonald, President of DORA Construction who have designed and will build this facility.
Mayor Savage said, “I am pleased to participate in this exciting event. This is precisely the type of investment that draws people to our city.” Halifax Regional Municipality was supportive in enabling this construction to proceed, in particular District 6 Councillor Tony Mancini.
Newbridge staff collaborated directly in the building’s planning and design. “The quality of the learning experience was key to the design process,” said Trevor MacEachern. Headmaster Jason Wolfe added, “The teachers were engaged in the design, and the space reflects their experiences in the classroom.”
“Somerled partnered with Newbridge on this venture because we recognize the success of the school and its growth potential with the right facilities,” shares David Wallace. “This is the right location and the right time for a facility like this. We are excited about this opportunity and have the ability to expand when the need arises.”
Harvey Architecture is behind the thoughtful design of the new school. Teaming up with DORA Construction, the design is a functional, environmentally efficient facility. The project team is hoping to also work together with HRM to harness the waste heat created from the new upcoming four-plex arena across the road. Between Harvey Architecture and DORA Construction the two companies have built over 100 schools in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
“DORA are most proud of facilities that help to shape the leaders of tomorrow. Being part of building schools and providing children with access to the latest in technology are rewarding projects for us,” says Donald MacDonald. “This school will be located in the heart of Dartmouth’s sport centre with access to all the training and development athletes need to shine.”
